Chronic Colitis Can Be Treated By Insulin – Researchers Said

Diabetes is not the only disease on which insulin has an effect, it appears. In a new study using tests on mice, researchers from the University of Copenhagen, among others, have discovered a new method for treating chronic colitis with regular insulin injecting into the rectum. There are numerous causes of colitis including infection, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis), ischemic colitis, allergic reactions, and microscopic colitis. Abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, with or without blood in the stool  are one of the hallmark symptoms of colitis.

Chronic Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes long-lasting inflammation and ulcers (sores) in your digestive tract. Ulcerative colitis affects the innermost lining of your large intestine (colon) and rectum. Ulcerative colitis is a life-long condition that you have to manage, rather than a life-threatening illness. It’s a serious disease that can cause some dangerous complications, especially if you don’t get the right treatment.

Chronic Ulcerative colitis mainly affects the lining of the large intestine (colon). This autoimmune disease has a relapsing-remitting course, which means that periods of flare-ups are followed by periods of remission. “Our new treatment with insulin on mice shows great potential against chronic bowel inflammation in humans, which causes a great pain to some people. Existing treatments attack the bowel’s immune system. It appears to work equally well, and it can probably be used in combination with existing treatments,” says Jorgen Olsen, co-inventor of the treatment, professor at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, University of Copenhagen.

The insulin works because it activates a gene inside the bowel cells, which, according to other studies, has an antioxidant effect and thus may be able to protect the bowel cells from inflammation. This makes the new treatment different from existing medication, which instead of strengthening the bowel’s weakens the immune system’s attack on the bowel. And therefore the researchers hope the new treatment can be combined with the existing.
